A new 600-metre bridge will connect New Town with Salt Lake Sector V in two months, reducing the load and congestion on the existing bridge that is currently the only connection between the two satellite townships. The officials of Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) said the construction of the bridge is in an advanced stage and it will be completed by April-end. Once open to traffic, the bridge is expected to considerably reduce congestion on the stretch of Biswa Bangla Sarani before Technopolis.
The new bridge that lies to the south-east of the existing bridge will connect the Ring Road behind Sector V to the south-eastern extension of New Town’s Main Arterial Road (MAR). This road will merge with the MAR at the Narkelbagan intersection where the Biswa Bangla Gate is situated.
“Once the bridge comes up, motorists heading to the city from the airport or Biswa Bangla Convention Centre can head straight to the south-eastern extension of MAR, instead of turning right at Narkelbagan. The road will lead to the bridge across Kestopur canal on to the Sector V Ring Road,” said a Hidco official.
Motorists who commute between Salt Lake and New Town daily said they are eagerly waiting for the completion of the bridge to reduce travel time. “The congestion at the box bridge and the road before Technopolis is increasing by the day. It is particularly bad during peak traffic hours. The bridge will be a big savior,” said a resident close to Chinar Park area, who travels between Rajarhat and Salt Lake almost every day.
